Banner and Link Specifications for Selective Deposit Collections

PMC requires one banner be supplied for Selective Deposit Collections. In addition, links or an HTML image map may be supplied for each banner. Specifications and guidance are provided below.

"Classic" Banner

This banner appears on PMC's classic HTML article pages. See the screenshots below of a default banner and a custom banner.

Default PMC-provided banner

Publisher-supplied custom banner

"Classic" Banner Image Specifications

Option 1: Generic Banner

  • Use default banner image provided by PMC
  • Link options: DOI of article or single publisher-specifed URL

Option 2: Custom Banner

  • Height: 75 pixels Width: 500 pixels
  • Format: png, gif, or jpg
  • Guidance: If the design includes a white background, we suggest including a 1 pixel border in a complementary color.
  • Link options: DOI, single publisher-specified URL, or HTML image map
  • Filename: Name your file using the pattern logo-journalname.gif (or png or jpg as appropriate)
  • Delivery: Email your files or upload them to the PMC FTP site.

In addition to the minimum specifications above, there are two distinct areas on the selective deposit multi-journal banner: the “Publisher Area” and the area “Reserved for Journal Title” (see figure below).

  • Do not put any text in the “Reserved for Journal Title” area, as PMC will dynamically output the name of the appropriate journal in this area.
  • You may include a background color or a light background image behind the “Reserved for Journal Title” area.
  • There does not need to be a line delineating the two areas.

Details on the sizes of the areas for the “Classic” banner are also shown in the image below.

Selective deposit collection banners can link to the article DOI, a single publisher-selected URL, or have one or more links from the Publisher Area using a client-side image map.

Here are a few working examples in live PMC articles:

If an HTML image map with links for the Publisher Area is selected, the HMTL image map file must accompany your banner image file. Links may be static, or can be dynamically generated by PMC from information available in the XML for an article, e.g., ISSN, volume and page number or DOI. Your image map should account for every pixel of the entire banner image, not just small areas of it. Here's an example of a well-formed image map for the "Classic" banner shown above:

Example: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4515538/

Although most of the banner links are static, the “this article” link in the example above is dynamically created using an HTML template provided by the publisher. The static base (e.g. http://dx.doi.org/) of the URL comes from the HTML image map. PMC then dynamically creates the complete URL by adding the doi (e.g., http://dx.doi.org/10.1530/JOE-15-0213 ). The variable element, in this case, the doi, is taken directly from the XML for the article. If you would like to use dynamic links, please provide specifications for the base & full URLs, as well as the source XML elements that should be used to create a valid unique URL for the article.

PubReader Banner

This banner appears on the PubReader article view, which is a view that is optimized for tablets and smaller screens. Learn more about PubReader. See the screenshot below.

A publisher can choose from one of three PubReader banner options for its Selective Deposit collection:

Option 1: Publisher-supplied generic image

The banner image meeting the specifications below should NOT contain a journal name. Instead, it should identify the Selective Deposit collection in general terms (for example, “ACS AuthorChoice”). The journal title will not be displayed in the banner.

The image design itself can be simpler than the banner for the classic article view, because it will only have a single link to the publisher’s site.

Option 2: Publisher-supplied multi-journal banner image

Publisher supplies a branded background image meeting the specifications below that works similarly to a watermark or wallpaper. It should be a repeating pattern that may include stylized text and can be expanded or contracted as necessary (horizontally and vertically) yet still be visually acceptable. PMC will superimpose the journal title on that dynamically so the background shouldn’t be so bold as to obscure the title.

Option 3: Generic PMC banner

Journal title inserted on a generic PMC image. This is the current PubReader default banner (for example, see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4428492/?report=reader), where PMC inserts the journal title and publisher name over a generic, nondescript background.

If option 3 is selected, no files are needed from the publisher.

PubReader Banner Image Specifications

  • Height: 90 pixels Width: 600 pixels
  • Format: png, gif, or jpg
  • Guidance: If the design includes a white background, we suggest including a 1 pixel border in a complementary color.
  • Link options: Single link only – will link to article DOI by default. If a different URL is required, please specify it.
  • Filename: Name your file using the pattern logo-journalname.gif (or png or jpg as appropriate)
  • Delivery: Email your files or upload them to the PMC FTP site.
